Excerpt from The Land of Gold (Alaska)Danger of England ever getting it, and he knew that in our hands it would be reasonably safe in that regard. We, of course, did not know enough to take it even at that price. Ten years later it was offered to us for five million dollars, but during that ten years we had not acquired that amount of sense, and so did not take it. During all these years it was for sale or gift to any country in the world but England, but not till 1867 was any country in the world found with sense enough - any of them had money enough - to buy it. What little of sense on that subject we had acquired by that time seemed to be in the possession of two men one of them was William H. Seward, of New York, then Secretary of State, the other was Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, then in the United States Senate.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
