The Hereford Breviary, Vol. 1

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from The Hereford Breviary, Vol. 1: Psalterium, Commune Sanctorum, TemporaleIT was hardly anticipated, when the editing of the Hereford Breviary, on behalf of the Society, was first undertaken more than ten years ago that it woultllbe such a lengthy task as it has proved. The Dean of Carlisle (dr. Henderson) had generously given to the Society his transcript of the only known printed edition of I 505, and this might have been passed through the press easily and speedily. The transcript however had not been made for publication by the Society but by the Dean for his own use, and he had not cared to follow the exact spelling of the original on the contrary, the copy was made in the spelling usually adopted for classical Latin at the time when it was made, but conformable neither to modern views of the spelling of classical Latin nor 'to the mediaeval spelling of ecclesiastical Latin. Moreover, apart from the spelling, the transcript did not attempt to represent the exact text of the Hereford book, but in many places was rather a collation roughly made with the Sarum Breviary than a transcript of the Hereford text, it was difficult, therefore, when the question arose of using it for the purposes of a reprint, to distinguish the passages where it exactly copied the Hereford text from those where it reproduced the Sarum text as printed in the Cambridge reprint of the Breviary (1879 It seemed desirable that the edition for the Henry Bradshaw Society should represent the mediaeval Service-book more exactly than this, and so it became evident that the transcript would need careful and extensive revision.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
