It was a dry summer, and in many parts of the country the wells were exhausted, and the pasturage burnt up. It was a good season for wall-fruit, and the orchards were very productive. I am old enough to remember the comet of 1811, and can distinctly recollect the parched state of the ground in the autumn of that year.
