I had spent the previous year writing fiction about Midwesterners who held little to no connection to the Midwest, which paralleled my own discontent from a youth spent in rural Ohio, and it was killing me. In my first year in New Orleans, all my writing paused. I was completely distracted by the come-together of people and environment?which I always took to be two separate entities?into one. So badly I wanted to enter this experience, have the threads of my personhood be interwoven with theirs. The day I realized this would never and should never happen was the day I began to write as myself. Each of the stories excerpted here present people who are not from the cities they now occupy. Some of the characters are trying, yet failing, to participate for the better, some are overdrawing their position in order to promote acceptance, others remain wayward. Privilege writ large has accelerated a transplant culture across the lower states and this collection leans into this population, reflecting on the tectonics of the modern South, not the caricature of the South too often peddled.
