The Great Alternative

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from The Great Alternative: A Plea for a National Policy An alternative is defined by Dr. Johnson as "the choice given of two things, so that if one be rejected, the other must be taken." The Great Alternative is such a choice given to England, a choice between the first place among the nations of the world and the last, between the leadership of the human race and the loss of Empire and of all but the shadow of independence. The idea set forth in this book is that England has the choice between these two extremes, with no middle course open to her. This idea is not a soothing companion. If it takes possession of an Englishman it will never let him rest. The Englishman, therefore, who values his peace of mind must, if possible, avoid it, let him by no means subject himself to the Influence of the following pages, for it pervades them, and if I have done my work well he will not escape the infection. In revising the book for a new edition I hope to have made the argument clearer by grouping the chapters Into books. My idea is that British policy must be based upon the realities of the world which it is the business of history to grasp.
