Its coast is characterized by shallow waters, sandy Shoals, capes, and rather low-lying islands, in which the harder rocks do not appear except in the glacial drift. The largest and most important of these islands are Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, separated from Cape Cod on the north by Nantucket and Vineyard sounds.
