It is decidedly to the political interest of France that an anti-german feeling be created among the Catholics of Spain, Switzer land, Scandinavia, the United States of America, the South American coun tries, and the Catholic citizens of countries already fighting on the side of the Triple Entente be confirmed in their hostility against Germany. So the book serves political ends. Moreover, it cannot be denied that these French circles which support the work and which may be designated brie¿y as the ecclesiastical and academic world of France, lend special force to the work, so that the blow struck at Germany is to be considered as a heavy and serious one. Hence the German Catholics cannot be denied the right to ward off those attacks.
