The Four Winds is set against the backdrop of the 1930s’ Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, probably the worst environmental disaster in American history.
I came west in search of a better life, but my American dream was turned inside out by poverty and hardship and greed. These past few years have been a time of things lost.
Elsa Martinelli has devoted her life to providing and protecting her family. When storms ravage the land, including the family farm, and her feckless husband Rafe disappears, she believes she has no choice but to take her children, thirteen-year-old daughter Loreda and eight-year-old Ant, to search for a better life in California’s so-called land of milk and honey.
But, as thousands of migrants pour over the border searching for that better life, they are confronted with prejudice from a people unwilling to help the majority wanting to work. With appalling living conditions, paltry wages, long, hot days picking cotton and nights under canvas in the squalor of the migrant camps, Elsa, Loreda and Ant must rely on every ounce of strength and courage, and the friendship of fellow migrants to survive.
When Elsa meets Nicolas Almeda, a Mexican activist fighting for the Workers’ Alliance against Capitalist injustice, she understands that she must also stand up and fight for what is right, give a voice to her beliefs and to the thousands of people unable to challenge the weight of the California growers. Along with Loreda, she willingly joins Nicolas and his committed band of followers in the struggle for justice, fair pay and better conditions.
She will pay the price, but she will also know that she has gained something she spent her whole life searching for...
