Excerpt from The Evening Post Hundredth Anniversary, November 16, 1801-1901Among the advertisements in the early numbers of the paper are some which show that the domestic slave trade was then in existence in the State of New York In one, a young negro woman, twenty - one years of age, capable of all kinds of work, and an excellent cook, was offered for sale, for want of employment. A black woman, twenty six years of age, and agood cook, was offered for sale on reasonable terms. The advertisers seem to have been willing to avoid publicity in this matter, for no names are given, but in the first of these cases the purchaser is referred to the printer, and in the other the name of the street and number of the house at which application is to be made are given.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
