Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth CenturyOne of the prominent features of the ecclesiastical history of Anne's reign was the incessant disputes in Convocation between, the High and Broad or Latitudinarian Church parties. These quarrels had arisen at the close of the last reign owing to a claim advanced by the Lower House, which was mainly composed of High Churchmen, to debate, adjourn, or prorogue independently of the action of the Bishops in the Upper House. This claim, which was contrary to precedent, had been stoutly resisted by the Primate and the Whig Bishops, who could ill brook the obstinate, intemperate, and undignified opposition of the inferior clergy under the able leadership of Atterbury, an acute controversialist. The death of William III.
