Raised to the episcopate of Bangor in 1715, he was translated to Hereford in 1721, to Salisbury in 1728, to Winchester in 1734. He lived till 1761, and was thus a prominent figure in the English Church for forty - Six years. Nor does this period comprise by any means the whole of his public life.
