Excerpt from The Elements of Commerce, Or, a Treatise, Vol. 2 of 2: On Different Calculations, Operations of Exchange, Arbitrations of Exchange, Speculations in Exchange and Banking Operations, Exchange Circulations Having considered, in the preceding volume, the operations of exchange under their several points of view, and examined their various degrees of utility in business, I think it now expedient to treat of the operations of gold and silver in specie and in bullion. Such operations are intimately connected with those in exchange, one of their principal objects being that of discovering the price of exchange which may be established between two contracting places in consequence of the purchase of a certain quantity of specie or bullion in one of those places, and of the sale of the fame quantity in the other. I shall confine myself, however, to treating of such operations only as result from the commerce of precious metals carried on by England with France, Ham-burgh, Holland, Portugal, and Spain, but the rules and examples which I hall furnish, the exposition of the differences of standard and conditions of sale, as well as the relation of weights, which will be found either in this part of my work, or in a subsequent part relating to monies, weights, and measures, generally, will afford the means of resolving any fort of calculation which may not have been foreseen.
