Excerpt from The Edison Monthly, Vol. 2: June 1909When Mrs Taft went into the White House to live, one of her first duties was to make a thor ough inspection of every corner in the big mansion, in order that she might familiarize herself with the system which then prevailed and with the available mechanical equipment for running the house. Almost the first thing her ready eye caught sight of was an old bufier for cleaning silver, which has been in the possession of the White House more years than any one is able to tell, and which hadbeenpaeltedawayinastore room out of use. The buffer, which is operated by electric power, was brought out of its dark corner and installed in the pantry just off the state dining room. Family and state silver is given even greater attention than ever before. Two men now clean the entire lot in a few hours, where hitherto it has required as many days to do the work by hand. In fact, much of the silver, particularly the largest pieces, was either sent away to be done out or cleaners were supplied by local kwelry firms. To-day it is done right there in the pantry at the turn of a switch.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
