Excerpt from The Earthquake at Casamicciola: July 28, 1883 On Saturday evening, (the 28th of July, ) about half-past nine, as I sat in my study, preparing for my work on the coming Sabbath, suddenly the table and the desk against which I leaned commence to move - then came a continued movement from side to side. The first thought was: yes, it is an earthquake - the next, almost as instantaneous, it must be only something in my very self - but the swinging of the gas gear and fittings told that the movement was really the quaking of the earth. The shock was slight and short. Little did we think, however, that the trembling here, marked the very hour when at no very great distance from the great and populous city of Naples, there came upon the islanders, and visitors, rich and poor, Italians and foreigners, one of the most terrible disasters known in the history of modern times.
