This book explores the meanings and uses of discourse markers in academic lectures through a discourse analytical approach. It demonstrates the 'patterning' of the ways discourse markers are used by English native speaker lecturers. It presents an analysis of the meanings and uses of two sets of discourse markers, the 'connective markers' (and, so and but) and the 'conversational interactive markers' (okay, right, well and now).
