Excerpt from The Digest of Physical Tests and Laboratory Practice, Vol. 1: A Résumé of Practical Tests Made in the Laboratories of the World, April, 1896 The only satisfactory method of ascertaining these quantities is by the use of some form of dynamometer - by which we mean an instrument or machine for measuring the power exerted by an engine or electro-motor, or the amount of power consumed in driving a single machine or machinery plant. A Dynamometer is primarily an instrument to measure the work done by an effort of some kind, the result being usually expressed in foot - pomzo's and given in a lump sum, as meaning ten thousand foot-pounds as in the case of the Integrating Dynamometer. But more frequently the result 15 a diagram area as by the Recording Dynamometer, which area, when measured by duly considering the co-ordinates and determining the area, represents the foot-pounds. Thus the steam engine indicator is, in one sense, a recording dynamometer, because the pressure ordinates of the indicator diagram multiplied by the stroke abscissas, gives an area which represents the foot-pounds of work performed by the engine for the corresponding stroke of that engine.
