The Development of the Railway System in Northumberland and Durham

Excerpt from The Development of the Railway System in Northumberland and Durham: 7th November, 1901In 1767 the plate-rail was introduced. It consisted of a short cast-iron plate with a vertical ¿ange projecting upwards to retain the wheels in position, the wheels being without ¿anges these were fastened direct on to the sleepers An improvement was afterwards made by the addition of a curved ¿ange on the underside to give additional strength. The use of the word platelayer, to denominate a surface man, has survived the plates he used to lay a hundred years ago. The great objection to these tram-plates was the friction of the wheels against the ¿ange, and their liability to become choked with dirt. Iron tramways were in use in South Wales for many years before they were adopted on the Tyne.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
