Excerpt from The Dare Boys
One afternoon, about the middle of the month of December, of the year 1777, three boys were walking slowly along one of the main streets of The Red City, as Philadelphia, owing to the fact that the majority of the houses were built of red brick, was then often called.
These three boys were bright, manly-looking youths, and two of them seemed to be about nineteen years of age, while the other was perhaps seventeen. They were dressed in the common blue homespun suits worn in those days by the farmers and peasants of the country.
These youths were Dick and Tom Dare, and a neighbor boy named Ben Foster, and their homes were across the Delaware, about three miles east of the river, in New Jersey.
