The Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel from Abraham Verghese, the author of the widely acclaimed and beloved book Cutting for Stone, published in 2009. Cutting for Stone sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and spent 107 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.Verghese’s readers have been waiting for this book for over ten years, and there is a large and captive audience ready for this new multigenerational epic which evokes Cutting for Stone in its historical setting, its rich characterization, and its brilliantly eventful and deeply moving story. We are aiming for the highest level of publicity for this title, including all major print, digital, and radio review outlets. We are pitching to all the national book clubs, including Oprah, and will also try for features and profiles. We are coordinating a cover reveal and interview with Hamilton Cain of Oprah Daily for mid-October.We are undertaking major early industry advertising including Shelf Awareness as well as pre-publication consumer promotions on Goodreads, Literary Hub, and social media, with a concerted pre-order push followed by a blockbuster, multi-million impression digital advertising campaign at on-sale with ads on top news and entertainment sites like NPR, New York Times, as well as significant outreach to local book clubs, South Asian and Indian American communities, and medical interest groups. We are printing thousands of ARCs for booksellers, media, librarians, and others, and will conduct regional independent bookstore outreach with targeted bookseller mailings.Verghese was the keynote speaker at CALIBA, and he will also attend Winter Institute. We are planning several high-profile events at publication, including the 92Y, Seattle Arts and Letters, Inprint Houston, and others. We have already sent early ARCs for blurbs to a fraction of Verghese’s extensive network, including John Irving, Sandra Cisneros, Ayad Akhtar, Anthony Doerr, Kiran Desai, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Atul Gawande, and Siddhartha Mukherjee.Verghese is pitching and writing several pieces and essays for outlets between now and publication, including one about his visit to a leper colony in Molokai for Travel & Leisure, and one in Departures’s Mexico issue. The Covenant of Water will appeal to fans of sweeping global family sagas, such as A Suitable Boy and Pachinko. It is a humane and moving novel that has brought many in-house readers to tears. We plan to cross-promote this new novel with the publishers of Verghese’s previous books, including Vintage for Cutting for Stone and My Own Country.
