H., June 11, 1857The spirit of the age is trying the Opinions of men as by fire. The old and the new - old errors and new follies - are clashing in a fearful strife. Conser vatism trembles, and retreats into the dim arches and twilight of the cell and Cloister, entrenches itself in a historic reminiscence, exhumes old traditions, burns its tapers on Protestant altars, imitates in the church, the sacerdotal formalities and puerilities of the medieval age, hoping, by retreat into the past, to secure its authority in the present, trusting to find God in the rear, who, like the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, leads on true hearts to the prom ised land.
