Excerpt from The Church and the Million, No. II., The "Navvies, " and How to Meet Them, A Letter to a Friend
The navvies are men by no means unwilling to give an atten tive ear to all you say. They only dread sham. They have a sound common sense, which leads them to value every word uttered which appeals to their moral sense, and which they feel Intuitively is true. There is no inclination to reject or scoff and jeer at religious instruction, as such.
On one occasion, on going to a tap-room, I found that some were inclined to assail what was said, and at first to hinder any address. I turned to the whole body of them, and said, Is there any man here who would not be frightened if he knew he would die to-night And yet there's scarce a man here who is afraid of the pain of dying.
