Excerpt from The Chemistry of Coke: Being the "Grundlagen Der Koks-Chemie"
With the vast increase of the coal and iron industry of Germany since the establishment of the Empire, the chemistry of fuels, and especially the scientific chemical investigation of coal, has come to be regarded in that country as every day demanding a larger amount of attention.
And certainly this View is not without justification, for the annual production of coal in the kingdom of Prussia rose from (metrical) tons in the year 1870, to tons in the year 1880, and tons in the year 1890. During this period of twenty years, therefore, the output of coal has been almost trebled.
