Fulton thinks. I picked his name out of a hat and this fellow lost.
First Lady by Kaufman and Katherine Dayton was written when the jockeying for the 1936 Republican nomi nation to Oppose Roosevelt was at its bitterest. When it opened November 26, 1935, public opinion polls showed Senator Borah of Idaho in the lead, with Governor Alfred Landon of Kansas second, newspaper publisher Frank Knox third, and former president Herbert Hoover fourth.
In the play the battle for the nomination between idealist Stephen Wayne and bumbling Supreme Court Justice Carter Hibbard is linked to the struggle 'for social prominence being fought by their wives. The combination of political and social rivalries on stage proved extremely appealing to theater audiences. Further, First Lady also attacked pres sure groups, newspaper publishers, and political hypocrisy.
