The Challenge of Non-Refoulement: Chechen Asylum-Seekers in Poland

Angebote / Angebote:

The principle of non-refoulement forms the very base of the international refugee law. It protects a refugee from being returned to a place where his safety or fundamental rights may be at risk. Initially composed within the 1951 Geneva Convention, now the principle is present in most legal acts concerning refugees' right to protection. Many scholars consider the non-refoulement as a rule of customary international law. This analysis investigates how the principle of non-refoulement works in Poland. Poland just recently became a host-country for asylum-seekers and lacks any convincing experience in this field. The largest group of forced migrants coming to the country have been Chechens escaping the civil war and serious human rights breaches occuring in their Caucasus republic. This book gives an answer on how these people have been protected by the principle of non-refoulement in Poland. The principle of non-refoulement forms the very base of the international refugee law.
