Excerpt from The Call of Honor After the cordial reception accorded my two recent books of poetry, Lilies of the Valley, and The Son of Man, I feel so near to the public that I do not hesitate to bring out this third volume, and hope that it, too, will be well received. There are many thoughts which can be expressed better in verse than in prose, and that is why I am using the former vehicle at this time. While I do not pretend that my poems are perfect, I have perfected them to the best of my ability (so far as perfection goes, nothing in this human world of ours can be perfect, because of such a great variety of tastes, standards, and criteria), and they may be interesting and pleasing to a large number of readers. Like Beecher, who said once that when the English Language got in his way, it would have to look out for itself, I warn all the languages that I use.
