Excerpt from The British Flower Garden, Vol. 2 of 7: Containing Coloured Figures and Descriptions of the Most Ornamental and Curious, Hardy Flowering Plants, Including Annuals, Biennials, Perennials, and Flowering Shrubs, With Their Scientific and English Names, Best Methods of Cultivation and Propagation The present species is a native Of North America, and several plants of it were received from thence by Mr. Colvill in 1823, from one of those our drawing was made last Summer: it is nearly related to V. Pubescens, but differs from that species in its spreading branched stems, and large woolly capsules, it succeeds best in a dry border of light rich earth, for being of rather a succulent habit, it is liable to suffer from too much moisture, it continues to bloom nearly all the Summer, and ripens plenty of seeds, but those must be carefully watched, and should be gathered before the capsule bursts, or they will probably be lost, as the capsule generally bursts with an elasticity which occasions all, or the greater part of the seeds to spring out, the best time for sowing those is in March, whenever the weather is fine, the plants may also be increased by dividing at the root.
