Excerpt from The Black Turpentine Beetle: Its Habits and ControlThe black turpentine beetle, long considered relatively harm less, has since 1949 been killing large numbers of pines throughout the Deep South, causing substantial losses to both timber growers and turpentine farmers.Presence of this large, black or reddish-brown bark beetle is indicated by tubular masses of reddish pitch on fresh stumps and on the lower trunks of standing pines. Adult beetles deposit groups of eggs a long tunnels in the inner bark. The larvae feed on the inner bark and often consume enough of it to girdle the tree.
