So crates, we are informed, never went to the theatre, except 'when the plays of Euripides were being exhibited. The poets and critics of a later age are said to have valued his dramas very highly. This is not remarkable, as apart from his imaginative and dramatic powers, Euripides 1s essentially a poet of civi lised life and culture. There are few authors whose writings supply so many appropriate quotations as those of Euripides do.
