The obscurity of his work, its individualism and concern for personal subjectivity made much of his work unacceptable to orthodox Soviet critics, who attacked him for formalism and alienation from the mass es. Apparently driven from original creation by the hostile pressure of his critics, Pasternak turned to translation, producing excellent versions of several of Shakespeare's plays as Well as selections from Ameri can and Georgian poets. He took advantage of the some what more lenient atmosphere of the time of the Second World War to publish two new original collections: On Early Trains (1943) and The Terrestrial Expanse which show a certain simplification and greater direct ness by comparison with his earlier work.
