Excerpt from Terra Mariae, 1917, Vol. 14 During the earlier centuries, when the scope of medicine and pharmacy was restrictive and not overtaxing to the average practitioner, there seemed little need for two separate pursuits, but later, as recorded experience accumulated, scientific investigation increased, and general intelligence grew more critical and exacting, such a division of labor between the compounder and the prescriber became absolutely imperative, in order that humanity's best interest might be served. Although at first the physicians and surgeons discouraged this segregation, they were not long in admitting its wisdom, and today unreservedly acknowledge their utter weakness in combating successfully certain diseases and conditions without the efficient remedies and agents prepared by well-educated pharmacists. Even thought conscious of this dual interdependence, and the preponderating higher training found on the side of medicine, there always have been in every generation and land some who - perchance from individual preference and sympathy - espoused the cause and uplift of pharmacy. Among those in Baltimore city, whose energies and attainments have been directed practically throughout their entire lives towards such an end, is professor Culbreth, who was born December 4, 1855, at the Reynolds homestead, Golden Ridge, nine miles west of Dover, Kent County, Delaware. His parents, striking examples of English, Scotch and Dutch ancestry, regarded industry, intelligence and truthfulness a most desirable inheritance - a creed, fortunately, they lived long to exemplify and to impress upon their only offspring. While for them the quiet, rural planter's existence seemed beyond escape, it was not be so for their son, toward whose educational and social betterment they gave much thought and concern, as well as willing self-abnegation and denial. After passing the various grades of public school he spent two years at Elton Seminary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
