Excerpt from Table Showing the Solidity of Hewn or Eight-Sided Timber, or of Any Octagonal-Sided Column: Compiled for the Accommodation of Timber-Growers, Merchants, and Surveyors, Stone-Masons, Architects, and OthersTo effect the computation of the solidity of any piece of hewn timber according to its thickness, the length of the tree or column must be taken in feet with a tape or rule in the usual manner, and the diameter or thickness must be taken in inches in the middle of such length, from one of its sides to its opposite side, with a pair of Callipers bow compasses).
