Excerpt from Supply and Marketing of Soybeans and Soybean ProductsThe acreage devoted to soybeans in Illinois averaged percent of the total land in crops in the three-year period 1929-1931 and was surpassed by com, oats, tame hay except soybean hay, and all wheat in the order named. During the same period the aggregate value of the soybean crop of the state represented percent of all crops and was surpassed by corn, oats, tame hay, and wheat. The average gross value of an acre for soybeans was sur passed only by com at an acre and was followed by tame hay at all wheat at and oats at an acre.In response to the need for an outlet for the increased supply of soybeans in Illinois, oil-extracting mills have been developed at various points. Soybean cake or its pulverized product, meal, resulting from the crushing process, has been utilized recently as a protein ingredient of mixed feeds. Manufacturers of such feeds have become important users of these products.
