Excerpt from Summer in the Winter Time
To our Southern Friends:
The information contained in "Summer in the Winter Time" is taken from data received direct from residents of the localities described, and in some cases received only after several requests for such information. In most instances the information has been freely and fully given, and the tender of assistance in the work has been so warmly expressed, that we feel greatly indebted for the proffer.
It may be that some will think we have not said enough about certain localities, and too much about others, if so, we plead the use only of "official" information - in some cases very meagre, and in others too voluminous to reprint in full, yet we have tried to use such, stating the salient points.
Important. - That our next edition may be more complete, we ask our Southern friends to criticise this work carefully and freely, and call our attention to anything needing correction, reduction, or addition. Every criticism shall receive careful consideration. Of course, we all appreciate that we want to give all the "facts in the case, " but want to put them as briefly and tersely as possible.
