Excerpt from Summary of the Controlling Factors of Artesian FlowsBedding planes. - Bedding planes, or the partings between indi vidual layers or beds of the same or different classes of rock, often carry large amounts of water. This is in part due to the fact that the adhesion along such planes is less than that in a mass of homogeneous material, a condition Which results largely from the imperfect con tact due to variations of material, changes in texture, variations in arrangement, etc., Which have resulted from changes or halts in depo sition. This lack of adhesion makes the bedding planes more readily available for the passage of water than the body of the rock. Differ ence in permeability of the overlying and underlying layers is also a leading factor in the concentration of water along the bedding planes, making the latter, next to the original pores, the most impor tant water containers. This is especially true where the planes have been somewhat widened by subsequent solution admitting the free passage of water, as shown in P].
