They appeared month by month in the Lay Reader Magazine from March to December, 1914. They are now reprinted by the kind permission of the Editors, because, though only part of a larger plan, they are complete in themselves, and the subject with which they deal makes them peculiarly suitable as an illustration of the task that I have undertaken, and because I feel that in the execution of my task I shall do well to seek the criticism of a wider circle than that which is supplied by my personal friends among the Lay Readers. For the object that I have in view is to help devout Christians to read the Gospels for themselves after a method and from a point of view with which, I fear, far too many are still unfamiliar.
