Excerpt from Studies in Farm Tenancy in Illinois: ThesisThe object of the present study is to set forth the facts relative to tenant farming in Illinois, and to find their causes. Thus far no such investigation has been made in any state in which distinctly Southern conditions do not obtain. Those investigations that have been made were confined to two states, Georgia and Mississippi, and of the reports of these inquiries only one has as yet appeared in print} During the eighties there was a large amount of discussion about farm tenancy in some of the magazines, but they were controversial and neglected many important phases of the tenancy situation. In more recent years articles in magazines and encyclopedias, chapters in books, and reports of learned societies have appeared in greater numbers and are characterized by greater freedom from argumentative tones.2 For the most part they are brief and, although valuable, are limited in s00pe.
