Aulus Gellius called his book of -miscellaneous essays and annotations Attic Nightsfbezause the reading on which they were founded and the arrangement of them constituted his business and amusement during many-long winter nights which he spent in Attica. For my own part, he says, and suitable to my own capacity, without care or study, and as some may think rudely enough, I have called my book Attic Nights from the place where it was written and from the circumstance of its being in the winter, thus yielding the palm to others in the dignity of my title, as the work itself is obviously inferior with respect to the.labour and embellishment of style.
