Excerpt from Statutes Of The University Of Oxford Codified in The Year 1636 Under The Authority Of Archbishop Laud, Chancellor Of The UniversityWhat progress Wolsey made with the task thus entrusted to him is now uncertain: no Statutes appear to have been published by his authority, and with his fall, the matter came to an end.New bodies of Statutes were imposed upon the University by the Visitors commissioned by Edward the Sixth in 1550, and by Cardinal Pole, Chancellor, in 1556, in the latter case being accepted by a vote of Convocation. These however were rather modifica tions of the existing Statutes in accordance with the changes in religion, than a complete compilation of the laws in force. The effect of interferences of this kind on the part of the Crown, or of the Chancellor at the instigation of the Crown, and the great development of the Royal prerogative under Elizabeth and James the First, was to diminish the independence of Con vocation as a legislative body, and to make the reformation of the Statutes appear a matter proper to' be regulated by external authority, and though several Delegacies were at various times appointed to undertake the task of digesting the Statutes, no substantial progress was made.In 1571, the University was incorporated by an Act of Parlia ment, 13 Elizabeth, which also confirmed the Royal Charters granted by preceding English Sovereigns down to and including that of 14 Henry VIII. During the Chancellorship of the Earl of Leicester, 1564 - 1588, several orders for the government of the University were sent down by him, under directions for their acceptance and confirmation which the Convocation would not dare to disobey.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
