Excerpt from Specimens of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Vol. 1: Biblical and Classical ThemesThe matter contained in the following specimens as well as order in which these are arranged, corresponds to a great extent with the contents of the first part of the 'specimens of anglo-saxon Prose'. By a comparison of the two the student will be able to appreciate the methods of the anglo-saxon poets in the treatment of themes taken from the Old Testament and from classical sources. As the specimens are intended to be used in connexion with the study of anglo-saxon literature, and the general form in which the texts have been preserved is not original, a more normal spelling than that actually found in the manuscripts has here and there been introduced. Such alterations are neither numerous nor important, and the removal of the exceptional forms not Oulv facilitates the understanding of the text, but will help to prevent undue importance being attached to mere matters of form.As before, I am much indebted to Dr. Schmidt Petersen of Bredstedt for generous help in supervising the printing of this work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
