Excerpt from Some Tendencies in EducationIt is now generally agreed that all subjects of instruction must be judged by the results they accomplish towards fitting men and women to share in the promotion and enjoyment of all that is best, truest, most elevating in society, and no subject or method that is not inconsistent with this view of education may be considered unsuitable for the schools. It must not be overlooked that instruc tion in this or that subject must still be the means through which the higher aims of education are attained. To be the child's mentor and guide in the process of acquiring knowledge must be the direct aim of the teacher.
