Excerpt from Some Sources of Human History The purpose of these outlines is to show some of the interests of human history, to those who are neither specialists nor students, and therefore a very general view is all that is attempted. In the choice of material, that which is less familiar has been taken in preference to that which has been already often treated: and the books referred to are those which are easily accessible, in preference to monumental works. The object has been to look over the country on each side of the beaten tracks of history teaching, and see some of the distant views and green fields. All that is said here no more represents the knowledge of the subject, than a glimpse of far-off hills teaches their geography. Yet even such a view may be relished by those who never expect to wander so far from the road. The dating given by the Egyptians themselves has been followed here, in accordance with the usage of Champollion, Bockh, Unger, Mariette and Wiedemann, which there is no reason to abandon.
