Excerpt from Some Ethical Questions of Peace and War, With Special: Reference to Ireland
Most of the questions raised in this little book are new, at least in the sense that, as far as I know, they have not been dealt with hitherto in scientific fashion and on Catholic lines. We are not, however, left without guidance, of general principles, which need to be applied with caution to cases undreamt of, or certainly not investigated, by our fathers in the schools.
This has been attempted of late, in some cases, I doubt whether with sufficient detachment. The atmosphere is too full of passion, and will be for long. Our successors will see more clearly, and will make, for all sides, allowances too generous for such as have lived through these last dreadful years.
And yet, as the whole world is talking of these questions, the Catholic schools of ethics should not ignore them. Not that on any of them one can hope to say the last word, but that, surveying them from different angles, one may direct attention to aspects that might be overlooked, and so contribute to a fuller view and a more equitable decision.
