Excerpt from Soldiers of the ProphetAlthough the compiler of the follow1ng account was in Damascus throughout the whole of the Operations, except for one brief visit to the Turkish base at Dera'a, really amazing difficulty 'w'as encountered in obtaining information. This was due to the fact that the British officer was no longer welcome in'the Turkish Empire, while the Germans, who were already in high favour, strongly resented his presence. Nevertheless, several of these suspected personages found their way to the ancient city in 1910. In August of that year Captain F. E. Packe, of the Welsh Regiment, and Captain G. E. Leachman, of the Royal Sussex Regiment, arrived. They were followed by Captain S. F. Newcombe, re, and at the beginning of November, two officers of the Egyptian Army - namely, Major C. H. Leveson, 18th Hussars, and Captain G. P. Knott, a.v.c. Came over and bought up a lot of ponies, greatly to the disgust of the German cavalry instructor in Damascus.
