Frequently he was beaten so as to be left senseless on the ground, for no other offense than that of conversing with his fellow sufi'erers in thdr native language. By this restraint he gradually lost, inagreat degree, In 1737 his great-grandfather purchased a farm in the neighborhood of Baltimore city, which, on hisdeath, descended to the father of Philip Gatch. The farm is now in the hands of the fourth generation, and retains the $111i name. There is still standing upon it the first Methodist meeting-house built in that part of Maryland.
