They were originally written without any thought of making them public. When I had written some of them for my own use, I ventured to send one or two to various people who had asked me to help them in their prayer. The way in which they were welcomed by these pious souls encouraged me to write down a large number - many more than are found in this little book - and for some years I have lent them in manuscript to those who were kind enough to ask me for them. It is in the hope that they may help some simple souls to overcome the difficulty they have found in meditation that I have consented to put them in print.
