Excerpt from Shortoff Missionary Baptist Church Highlands, North Carolina: HistoryThere is not much to say, as to where I gained my in formation as everyone knows I have been working on this pro ject or bit of History of our Church for quite sometime now, using its own records and the letters to the Association as well as members knowledge. I only wish I could be able to say something for or about every person that helped to make this life possible for us in our community and helped to mold our Christain life. To those, we at least owe our sincere thanks I am not a Historian, or a writer, but I hope this will be something that our present members can grow by and our ancestor can be proud of. I personally would like to thank each and everyone who had a hand in the development and shaping of mine and the other members life in this Church.It is very difficult to say just how we got started, ex cept that someone had a vision and faith to step forward and made the start.From one source of information, I gather the ('old School House') as we knew it actually was an old school house built in 1906, and named Emmons Industrial School. A number of our community members actually attended school there. Prior to thi school house, our school was just across the road from the Chur The Old School House or Emmons Industrial School, was built in 1906 with members of the community donating their money and lab to construct the building. It is believed that Grandpaw Wright (barak) possibly donated the lumber Since he owned a saw mill i the community. The building was built on piers of stone 25 sq and Jabe Talley has some of the stones now.
