Engages with both lyric and concrete/visual poetics.
Overarching mood: nostalgic, reverent, spirited.
The book itself is a conversation between poets: Following the death of poet William Hawkins on July 4, 2016, Cameron Anstee was gifted Hawkins' Olivetti Lettera 30 typewriter, a lightweight manual travel typewriter from the early 1970s. Cameron began by re-typing some of Hawkins' poems on the Olivetti as a way of re-engaging with his friend's work, before starting to use it to explore how his own developing minimalist poetics would be changed if the typewriter was the mode of composition. The result of those explorations—this book—was composed entirely on Hawkins' Olivetti using the same ribbon that was on it when he died.
For readers of Robert Lax's poems (1962-1997), N.H. Pritchard's The Matrix: Poems: 1960-1970, and Paul Stephens' absence of clutter: minimal writing as art and literature.
Cameron's PhD is in Canadian literature and book history, small press history, bookselling history, and he's well-positioned to speak about independent publishing, chapbooks, small presses, literary readings, and book design—in addition to writing minimalist poems.
Cameron edited the most recent publication of William Hawkins' poetry, The Collected Poems of William Hawkins, which is also available from Invisible Publishing.
