Excerpt from Sermons
John Service was born on February 26, 1833, at Campsie, a village within ten miles of the Clyde, at the foot of the Campsie Hills, the range which first swells upward from the Western Lowlands of Scotland towards the Western Highlands guarding Loch Lomond and Loch Katrine. His father was employed as an engraver in the print-works of Mr. Robert Dalglish, for many years M. P. for Glasgow. The boy received the rudiments of his education in the parish school from a master whom he described as a good teacher but rather a severe disciplinarian. It is remembered of his school days that he once wrote an essay which was considered to be so obviously beyond what a boy of his age could possibly produce that his master thrashed him soundly for it.
