Excerpt from SermonsA work which was produced in consecutive parts during several years in Glasgow, and which served students of literary and intellectual promise as a sort of exercise ground, and provided some of them with an introduction to well-known literary men connected with it as con tributors. It was probably in this way that Service came under the in¿uence of Professor J. P. Nichol, the author of the Archifecture of the Heavens, and to that distinguished man, who inspired all who were so fortunate as to know him personally with some spark of his own philosophic, philanthropic, and religious enthusiasm, he owed what was probably the most powerful intel lectual and moral impulse of his youth. His literary work, and probably some of the scruples arising from the too rigid interpretation that was then commoner than now of the most systematic of Church standards, that often entangled the feet of the best aspirants to the ministry, delayed his entrance into the Church, which took place, however, in 1862. Three years previously, in 185 9, he had been married, at Glasgow, to Jessie, second daughter of Mr. James Bayne, teacher of music there.
