Excerpt from Selections From Charlotte Niese's Aus Dänischer Zeit: With Introduction, Explanatory Notes and a VocabularyCharlotte Nmsn, the writer of the sketches herewith submitted to teachers and students of German, was born on June 7, 1854, at Burg, on the little island of Femern (german Fehmarn) in the Baltic, where her father held the position of assistant pastor in the State Church. Upon his promotion to the pastorate at Riesebye, in 1862, Char lotte was left with her maternal grandfather at Burg, where he held a minor government position. It may not be amiss to recall the fact that Femern at that time was Danish territory. The political restlessness then fast leading to a clash of arms between Denmark and her southern neighbors had also extended to the little island. The Sch leswig-holstein question at bottom a race question between Danes and Germans was in the air. The German national spirit was unwilling to have the ancient duchies, Schleswig and Holstein, become entirely incorporated into the Danish dominion. The population of the two provinces was very largely German, stammverwandt, 'kindred.'
